Satirical in its treatment of patriarchal roles NICOTINE LOVE takes influence from melodrama to explore the antagonistic relationship between a housewife and her domineering husband. As Angela quits smoking and becomes less dependent on nicotine patches, Eric loses his grip over her and their marriage when she becomes active and begins a life outside of their home. In an attempt to revert her to her submissive role of housewife he uses nicotine patches on her whilst she sleeps. Can she get away or will nicotine love beat her again?


NICOTINE LOVE is a 10-minute short film that could be described as an experimental melodrama. The film takes influences from two of melodrama’s most acclaimed directors; Douglas Sirk and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, to create two contrasting styles that will highlight the change in Angela’s character as she stops using nicotine patches and Eric loses control over her. A third, very experimental, style of filmmaking will then be implemented to represent the disturbing ending that occurs after Eric’s plan to revert Angela to a submissive housewife backfires with extreme consequences.
